Mount Olive Bus Driver Qualifications

The Mount Olive Township School District does everything possible to see that its transportation employees are careful safe drivers in full compliance with state statute. According to the Motor Vehicle Commission, the agency that authorizes school bus driver licensure, a bus driver in New Jersey must pass all tests for a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an Air Brakes endorsement (to drive a larger 54 passenger bus). In addition to skill-based testing, to obtain a CDL (school bus S endorsement), drivers operating under the jurisdiction of the Department of Education (DOE) must pass a state and federal background check (N.J.S.A. 18A:39-19.1):

The following are possible reasons a driver endorsement may be disqualified or suspended: Accumulation of 12 or more motor vehicle violation points or operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, deviant or illicit social behavior, any crime indicative of bad moral character, or the use or threat of bodily force.

In addition to good driving records, drivers must also meet certain medical requirements each year. The MVC suspends bus drivers' licenses for any of the following conditions:

  • Diabetic condition
  • Serious heart condition
  • Medical condition that could cause the loss of consciousness
  • Failure to meet vision standards

Further, all Mount Olive school bus drivers must confirm that they have never had their personal drivers license suspended or revoked before being considered for a bus driving position. Suspensions or revocations of any type of license is cause for the denial of a bus driving job with the district.
