Robotics Curriculum Overview

Mt. Olive High School Robotics Engineering Curriculum

LEVEL  I - INTRODUCTION TO ROBOTICS ENGINEERING (FULL YEAR)                                         9,10,11,12

This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of the LEGO NXT platform as it teaches science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Students will learn how to use feedback from sensors, applied mathematics and measurement to program their robot to navigate in its environment. Students will have the opportunity to complete multiple challenges involving guided research, problem solving, working in teams, and design documentation by means of an Engineer's Notebook.  Students interested in participating on the Mt. LEVEL II - ROBOTICS ENGINEERING (FULL YEAR)                                                                                 10,11,12

This course is built around the fundamental understanding of the systems that make up robots and the development of workplace competencies. The cornerstone of the class involves solving engineering design problems. The teacher will be placed in the role of a facilitator/mentor, the student in the role of project manager/problem solver.  Students participating on the Mt. Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Identify, formulate solutions for, and solve engineering technology problems using engineering design processes
  • Apply knowledge of mathematics, science and technology to solve robotic engineering technology problems
  • Function on multi-disciplinary teams
  • Communicate effectively using various forms of communications
  • Recognize the need for, and demonstrate the ability to, engage in life-long learning
  • Describe and implement  various methods used to manage and schedule projects
  • Participate in and/or conduct design reviews
  • Collect, analyze and interpret data

Prerequisite:  Successfully passing Level I - Introduction to Robotics Engineering and no documented Safety Infractions from any Related Arts courses (Wood/Robotics).

ROBOTICS III/IV/INDEPENDENT STUDY (FULL YEAR)

After successful completion of Level II - Robotics Engineering, students will engage in the selection, design and implementation of an independent research project in the areas of robotics, engineering and computer integrated manufacturing.  The integration of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and the Mt. Olive Robotics Team (MORT) is an important component of this course experience.  For more information about the FIRST Robotics Competition please visit www.usfirst.org.

Prerequisite:  Successfully passing Introduction to Robotics Engineering, Robotic Engineering Technology and no documented Safety Infractions from any Related Arts courses (Wood/Metal Shop).
