Cultural exchange

posted: Wed, Jan 25th, 2017

Four students from China will spend the week of February 13 at Mount Olive Middle School, experiencing life as American students and sharing stories about life in their native land. To make the experience authentic and complete, the Chinese seventh-graders will live with families of MOMS students that volunteered to serve as hosts. They'll ride buses to school with their American peers and attend classes and clubs. They'll also spend one afternoon touring Mount Olive High School.

A welcome breakfast is planned for the international guests, their host families, and several Mandarin-speaking MOMS students who will serve as guides for part of the week.

"This really is an incredible opportunity for our students," said science teacher Katelin Riggs who is coordinating the visit. "It will open them up to a world and system of education that is drastically different from what they know."

The visit by the Chinese middle-schoolers comes as the district plans to open the doors to about 30 tuition-paying high school seniors from China next school year. The program will provide a unique cultural exchange for students of both countries and is expected to bring the district up to $600,000 in revenue.

In preparation for the program's implementation, more than 100 Chinese high school students will visit Mount Olive High School this month to explore all that the MOHS has to offer.
